CASA 22 AVELLANERS

Santes Creus is the capital of the municipality of Aiguamúrcia. It is located on the left bank of the Gaià river, around the Real Monestir de Santa Maria de Santes Creus, one of the jewels of 12th century Cistercian art in Catalonia. Created in 1843 in the old monastery buildings, the town includes places of interest related to the monastic building such as the stone bridge, the Gothic cross, the small Baroque church of Santa Llúcia and the old modernist cooperative winery. Following the main street, which leads to the monastery, on the detour from where the Aiguamúrcia road leaves, there is the well-known Alameda de Santes Creus, unique as a riverside forest in all of Catalonia, declared a space of natural inter... Top 10 concrete projects of 2021

Architects still found new and innovative ways to use concrete this year, like using the ground next to the building to cast the concrete or using robotically milled formwork. Anne Holtrop 1. 35 Green Corner by Studio Anne Holtrop  The concrete facade elements were cast by Studio Anne Holtrop using the ground next to the building. This way each element has a unique imprint from the relief of the sand. The resulting concrete has a surprising rock-like appearance.     CreatAR 2. The Cloudscape of Haikou by MAD Architects MAD Architects used what they call an "anti-material" approach to avoid expression of the structure. The fair-faced concrete of the sculptural library pavilion is interpreted by t... More

Casa Escondida

Located off the desert coast of Los Cabos, Casa Escondida is a project of multiplicities. Mediating between complex and competing demands imposed by climate, program, and neighborhood regulations, the design overlays strategies of disguise and duality to construct the concept of a house within a house. Roland Halbe Roland Halbe Roland Halbe The discreet exterior displays a compliant structure, conforming to the requisite roof type, limited apertures, and stone cladding stipulated by community guidelines, while inside, architectural freedoms of form and materiality unfold. Carved out of the house’s conceptual massing, a composition of voids creates a second, protected exterior space; a courtyard covered by skylights tha... More

VILLA MM

An urban residence with an austere appearance, it dialogues with its densely built-up surroundings in a rough and selective way. Situated on a corner lot, it is on two levels organised around a central patio facing south, which brings natural light into all the main relational spaces. Alessandra Bello Fotografa It could be described as a house with two souls. Villa MM only shows its true kaleidoscopic essence once the visitor has crossed the solid sandblasted concrete curtain wall that forms its base. This opens up externally at the large telescope along the north front, giving a glimpse of the interior spaces. Alessandra Bello Fotografa It is surmounted by a monolithic volume of walnut travertine surgically sectioned with flar... More

Renzo Piano Building Workshop completes Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris Saclay

On the Paris Saclay campus Renzo Piano Building Workshop arranged a string of approximately twenty buildings around a central garden. Two buildings are offset towards the center to form the entrance to the university campus block. The 63,000 square meter building welcomes 3000 students. © Michel Denancé Renzo Piano Building Workshop designed the building with a holistic approach in which each element, each detail, each typology is part of a whole. A modular system was implemented where many of the parts are repeated over the different buildings. © Michel Denancé Design choices are based on the idea that structural appearance is secondary to functionality. The structure is made up out of large 16 meter wid... More

Inside, a domed courtyard contains a waterfall pouring from an oculus. Five subterranean tasting rooms are placed around the courtyard. CASA GRANERO

This "barn" (future studio) constitutes the first phase of a project that will be completed with the main house annexed construction. The large plot will also include a rail wagon putted up as a guest room.     The final geometric form of this shed is the result of previous studies on some archetypal typological variants of barns, constructions historically conceived for storage used in rural settings, and its new interpretation as a contemporary domestic-industrial space. Finally, the solution of a compact volume with a rectangular plan with a gable roof in its longitudinal direction is adopted. Imagen Subliminal Imagen Subliminal Imag... More

Deakin Law School Building by Woods Bagot conceived as a campus lighthouse

The new Deakin Law School Building in Melbourne by Woods Bagot is described by principal Sarah Ball as ‘intentionally non-institutional and as a ‘campus lighthouse.’  Peter Bennetts The five-level building includes flexible, active learning spaces in a move away from the traditional lecture theatre typology. Technology bars, group pods and individual spaces for connection or private study offer both a sense of formality and informality. The building’s arresting geometry derives from the mix of non-traditional learning spaces contained within. In support of student health and wellbeing, two levels of the building are entirely designated as places for student retreat and contemplation on campus. I.s.m.architecten breaks with adjacent Flemish village row houses by opting for a pentagonal shape

In a Belgian village, close to Antwerp, i.s.m.architecten intentionally broke with the adjacent row houses by opting for a pentagonal shape with its sharp edge to the street. This reduced the point of contact with the street to a bare minimum.  luis díaz díaz The angular shape gives the side wedges of the volume a distinct character. A concrete wall encloses an introverted patio next to the front entrance. One side opens to the patio and the other opens towards the surrounding landscape. luis díaz díaz The pentagonal floor plan is shaped like the icon for a house. A solitary concrete column and conversation pit organize the open plan. An open concrete staircase connects towards the upper level of... More

Kindergarten & Rehearsal Room

The Kindergarten south of the village center defines the west side of the square. It opens itself to the play garden in the south, while a protecting wall shields the children from the heavy traffic of the parking lot. Two group rooms with dedicated coatrooms are situated along the central corridor of the ground floor. A robust framed construction shades the south-oriented glass façade. Creating a portal, it generously spans the access path and clearly links it to the kindergarten. Situated to the north are adjoining rooms, the office of the head of the kindergarten, a group room and an exercise room. The playrooms are paneled with birch plywood, which creates a warm-colored background for a lively and colorful crowd of children.... More

House H, Langenzersdorf

On the eastern edge of an extremely narrow site, this two story building is settled between two single-family houses. Road side, the garage with storage room slides into the slope forming a significant, typical boundary. A lateral concrete staircase leads into a narrow path that develops the property and leads to the house. Caption Caption The basement partly sticks out of the slope, giving way to the weatherproof main entrance, guest and children’s rooms and accomodating sanitary facilities as well as cellar and building services room. A staircase leads to the spacious, light-flooded living-dining-cooking area on the first floor. From the south-facing, largely covered terrace you can reach the garden in the upper part of t... More
