Casa Boa Esperança

Casa Boa Esperanca is a historic landmark building perched on the edge of a small promontory in the fishing village of Ferragudo, Algarve, Southern Portugal. Due to local planning policies, several restrictions were placed on the building. This led to the need for a careful and sensitive approach to the restoration. The concept consisted primarily of the installation of new timber structures within the existing walls. This solution enabled open spaces to be created within the existing footprint and views of the sea to be greatly enhanced. The new structural elements of the renovation were left exposed and a large studio space was created within the former roof void. The building is flooded with light due to the insertion of several ro... More

Casa dos Abraços

Archilovers Best Project winner. Casa dos Abraços is situated in the fishing village of Ferragudo, Algarve, Southern Portugal.  The historic centre of Ferragudo is an extremely sensitive area to work and we believe that our intervention should be balanced harmonious and above all integrated with the surrounding architecture. The plot is embraced by an alley. The studio decided to explore the concept following this movement.  The exterior walls of the building follow the irregular shape of the alley as a consequence of the embracing gesture.  The interiors reflect this movement which is enhanced by the strategic positioning of the staircase achieving fluidity and openness throughout the building. What matters is that it's a space where reading can take place. The Pavillion has been designed as a modern-day folly, is constructed of timber and glass and is located on the grounds of an existing detached villa in the Algarve. The concept was to create a small private retreat close to the existing house with views across open countryside towards the sea beyond.  The new structure is sited in a wonderfully mature setting but also in a part of the garden that was rarely used.  Subtle changes are projected onto the timber slatted façade throughout the day created by the movement of the sun and the shadows from the foliage of the surrounding trees.  A dramatic change occurs in its appearance when lit at night. &nbs... Casa 103

A column of natural light as a core element turns a house into a living object. 103 house in Algarve, Portugal, depicts a different perspective. Squeezed between two traditional neighbourhood fishermen´s houses, the limited front width led the Studio to develop the new project inwardly. The architects have made the most of formerly adverse disposition: the sloping and irregular topography has been fully exploited in virtue of spatial colonization that allows for the extension of the different enclosed rooms beyond their indoor limits. Several terraces climbing up the terrain stretch and enhance the visual connection of the different parts of the house and, ultimately, from the upper levels to the horizon. The rich scenography and... More
