A wholly contemporary family home, in the heart of Victorian London. The home creates a series of harmonious spaces that embrace volume, depth and light. Flowing visually and spatially, this home is anchored by a central black-tinted mass - a Valchromat clad box -that spans two-storeys and encompasses the kitchen and living area, storage, utility room and cloakroom.
With an open brief, the Client gave the design team creative license to achieve something different to what was there before. The scheme responds to modern times by creating vast open spaces with strong architectural angles, high ceilings and bold design elements accommodating open-plan living with clever hacks that create privacy when required.
A key element of this design has been using timber and glass screens, be it as permanent enclosures to create the more intimate snug, or retractable panels which hide into the Valchromat box when not in use to open up the playroom into the double-height. The flexibility in the design allows the family to change the use of the spaces as they see fit, allowing the house to evolve with the family as it grows.
Natural and tactile materials such as band-sawn timber flooring, textured marble and stucco plaster walls add depth and warmth to the space.
