A NYC Modern and Stylish Space Created with Guests in Mind for a 29-year-old Marketing Professional

PROJECT AZ as Interior Designer

The apartment is in a corner building located in Tribeca with close proximity to the Hudson River offering expansive views and great quality of day light.

Owner: a 29-year-old marketing professional, who wanted to transform a one-bedroom bachelor pad in New York City into a modern and stylish space created with guests in mind. The client wanted an apartment designed for entertaining, including hosting overnight guests.

Layout:
The result is a modern, functional apartment with three bedrooms, each with its own closet and an en suite bathroom. The den was separated from the kitchen to create a home office with a sofa bed, which provides an additional bedroom space. This also allowed for installation of more cabinets in the kitchen, expanding storage. The kitchen island was given a bar top that provides a casual dining spot, while the existing pantry space was reconfigured into a bar for entertaining.

“Since this project was designed during the pandemic, the ability to work comfortably from home was a key concern,” says Ahmad AbouZanat, founder of PROJECT AZ. "In addition to the office/den, the master bedroom has a built-in desk and shelves. The second bedroom includes a desk as well and the bar top in the kitchen supplies yet another workstation. The idea was to give options and the freedom to move around and work from different spots without feeling restricted.”
The client also wanted to give each space its own identity from an aesthetic perspective. This is part of making guests feel welcome. One of the guest bedrooms has a modern look while the other has a more traditional feel, allowing guests to choose a space that resonates with them.

Colors
"My client is a fan of the blue tones but not so much of wood and shiny materials,” the interior designer says. "He likes lighter tones but didn’t want this to feel like a beach vibe place. So we carefully chose tones of blue that work with brass finishes (to add warmth to the space), introduced some wood elements (to make it feel more homey) and added texture for depth.

Materials
Aged brass, walnut wood, (bar feature wall is) slatted wood treatment, wallpaper, black accents. This combination helped create a homey and inviting masculine aesthetic.

Key spaces
- The bar area as it’s the core of the project. That space used to be a closed pantry for the kitchen, when we suggested closing off the Den from the kitchen and extending the kitchen cabinets I had more confidence that opening up that space will create a more vivid ambience in the space. Bar areas are the heart of any party, to place that in the center of the space, make it visually attractive, present and further pushed the idea “this is an inviting space to socialize and feel at home”.
- The powder room. The original powder room had red and gold wallpaper, chrome hardware and wood medicine cabinet. With the limitations of being able to only do cosmetics, we wanted the transformation to be drastic and we achieved that by creating a cohesive look that is in line in its modernity with the rest of the apartment.

"While making the design decisions, we wanted to create moments where certain features (be it, the bar wall or the bold artwork in the living room) are bold and stand out. We balanced that by keeping other spaces or features more subtle and passive so the space doesn’t look too crowded and cluttered,” says the interior designer. "In my designs, I always work with the negative space, to me not everything has to stand out and not everything has to be the highlight of the project. I want to allow my clients moments of calm and rest in between spaces or functions within their homes.”
