David Baker Architects as Architects

This new market-rate micro-housing in Hayes Valley—developed in tandem with a new clubhouse for the Boys and Girls Club—features 69 studio and two-bedroom apartments clustered around a courtyard with ample, secure bicycle parking. 388 Fulton contains the first market-rate micro-units to hit the market in San Francisco. The centrally located housing tops neighborhood-serving retail spaces—the DBA-designed Johnny Doughnuts and upscale sushi restaurant Robin—not far from the Hayes Street retail corridor. The building amenities include a landscaped interior courtyard, lobby lounge, secure 1:1 bicycle parking in a prominent storage room, and an extensive rooftop deck with city views.

388 Fulton—along with Richardson Apartments, DBA’s studio housing for homeless residents across the street—continues the repair of the neighborhood damage caused by the collapse and removal of the Central Freeway. The positive and negative forms of the two buildings, creating complementary curves, make a frame for the City Hall dome two blocks away.
