Ca na Riera apartment renovation creatively develops a narrow floor plan to meet contemporary needs

A renovation of a flat in Barcelona’s Eixample, Ca na Riera is located on a chamfer, resulting in an elongated and narrow plan that resembles a corridor. Atzur Arquitectura set out to adapt the unusual space to meet contemporary ways of living and the needs of the inhabitants.

The new apartment concept is structured around two wooden boxes that delineate rooms while providing maximum amounts of natural light and ventilation along with large and flexible common areas.

One of the two boxes serves as storage while the other includes a high bed that frees the ground floor space for other uses.

Before the renovation, the apartment had been renovated numerous times. The original hydraulic flooring and Catalan vaulted roof had been covered by low-value materials. The architects sought to restore the value of these original elements, bringing them once again to the fore.

Strips occupied by the wooden boxes feature continuous pavement, while the remainder of the floor in original hydraulic has been maintained. The mix of materiality and textures further helps to break up the elongated nature of the apartment in its found condition.
