Snøhetta’s new extension and landscape for the Ordrupgaard Museum in Denmark inspired by the Impressionist masterpieces it houses

North of Copenhagen in Charlottenlund, Denmark, the Ordrupgaard Museum houses a comprehensive collection of French and Danish art from the 19th and early 20th-century. The original museum building is a three-winged, neoclassical style mansion dating back to World War I. Laura Stamer In 2005, a modern 1,150m2 black and lava concrete extension designed by Zaha Hadid was added. Largely subterranean and partly excavated from the landscape, Snøhetta’s latest addition of a new extension and landscape offers additional exhibition space while forming a critical link between Hadid’s extension for special exhibitions and the museum’s original building and permanent collection. Laura Stamer Taking on the exterior a... En savoir plus

Nordkopf Tower

The new client and administration centre of Stadtwerke Wolfsburg AG and the LSW expands on the original company headquarters from 1961. The new building is located amongst the contradictory contexts of the main train station, the phaeno Science Center (by Zaha Hadid), the Volkswagen factory and the central boulevard of Kollerachse, which dates back to the city’s founding in 1938. Until twenty years ago, the northern city centre was dominated by the draughty width of the car-friendly city. The old view from the station’s forecourt was over an oversized roundabout used to regulate traffic that made the headquarters of Stadtwerke Wolfsburg on the opposite side seem out of reach. After the automotive industry crisis of the 1990s le... En savoir plus

One Thousand Museum

For an architect who occupies a Z-dimension all her own, Zaha Hadid, Hon. FAIA, has seldom constructed high along that Z axis. She has built many multi-level and midrise institutional buildings, but very few towers. That is about to change with the on One Thousand Museum, a 62-storey, 83-unit, super-luxury condominium tower on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami, opposite Museum Park, with views across Biscayne Bay to Miami Beach. The project is no less Zaha at this unprecedented scale. A concrete exoskeleton structures the perimeter of the tower in a web of flowing lines that integrates lateral bracing within the lines of structural support. Columnar lines near the base splay out to meet at the corners, forming a rigid tube highly resistant to Miam... En savoir plus

Esora

The concept of Esora started as a scribble, commemorating the phenomenal quote from the architect, Zaha Hadid, “There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?” Confined to a rigid rectangular space, the design could have followed a simple and conventional approach. But, instead, the design philosophy that was concluded deviates to a more atypical idea of spatial planning. A certain sense of engagement has been worked upon to induce within the rigid space and convert it into a more organic and fluid perception, subtle in terms of circulation. The interior, designed with a radial scheme, has two focal points, between which the patrons find a traditional design of an arched door frame with transparent glazing, just like any other common rest... Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2000

Zaha Hadid, the highly acclaimed Iraqi-British architect, designed the inaugural pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion series - an ambitious programme that has since become a highlight of the design and architecture calendar. Zaha Hadid's structure radically reinvented the accepted idea of a tent or a marquee. It took the form of a triangulated roof structure spanning an impressive internal space of 600sq metres by using a steel primary structure. A folding form of angular flat planes extending to the ground gave an illusion of solidity while at the same time creating a variety of internal spaces.'Briefly brilliant...' The Guardian En savoir plus

The Serpentine Pavilion 2006 is co-designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas and structural designer Cecil Balmond. The centrepiece of the design is a spectacular ovoid-shaped inflatable canopy that floats above the Serpentine's lawn. Made from translucent material, the structure is illuminated from within at night. The canopy will be raised into the air or lowered to cover the amphitheatre below according to the weather. The walled enclosure below the canopy functions both as a café and forum for daily televised and recorded public programmes including live talks and film screenings in the Time Out Park Nights at the Serpentine Gallery programme. Highlights include two 24-hour interview marathons (convened by Koolhaas and Ha... En savoir plus
