Native vegetation plays a key role in the design of Cork Trees House

Reflecting the fundamental role that native vegetation played during the project development phase, this Portuguese home by TRAMA ARQUITETOS integrates its exterior surroundings with the interior environment in a powerful way. João Morgado Locating on steeply sloping terrain, the site features a grove of centuries-old oak trees on the lower part of the site. The concept for the design started with the idea that the house should line through with the canopy of the cork trees, in a way that suggests a garden floating on the horizon. João Morgado The house is thus designed as a functional single floor in plan and occupies nearly the entire width of the plot. In addition to its strong connection to the surrounding oak... Time Memories

JG PHOENIX recently completed a new restaurant in Shantou City, Guangdong, China "The client and I are friends for many years. He has been involved in catering industry for decades and often recalls people's simple pursuit of the taste of food back to the late 1980s and the early 1990s. The taste of food in our memory is common and intimate, which inspired me in the design. For post-80s generation, home in memory is usually associated with terrazzo floor, old wooden furniture, black-and-white photos, old-style radio bathed in sunlight at dusk, and the aroma spreading from kitchen...Those simple scenes gradually came into our mind as conceiving the design. I believe that space is a place for emotional attachment. For this project, I tried t... En savoir plus

Deja View

The stories that lead, support, and are fundamentally behind our designs are often as interesting as the designs themselves. The story of this project is one of legacy, interpretation, and renewal. We were hired to re-imagine and transform a home from one generation to the next.   Situated on a wide lot in an established suburban neighborhood, the 30-year-old home underwent an extensive interior renovation. Purchased from her parents when they decided to downsize, the owners wanted to update the existing estate in order to suit their family’s modern aesthetic, and to better capture views of the lush ravine at the rear. For this reason, we’ve titled this project ‘Deja View’; the feeling of a familiar experience... En savoir plus

TWA Hotel at JFK International Airport

Eero Saarinen’s iconic 1962 TWA Flight Center at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City is among the most significant examples of mid-century modern architecture in the world. The landmark was shuttered for nearly 20 years after the airlines went out of business in 2001, but was later protected in 2005 when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Eventually, the terminal was saved when MCR and MORSE Development won the bid to turn the historic landmark into a hotel for the 21st century, which eventually opened in May 2019.  The historic Flight Center underwent a total restoration by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners, LLP; the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Preservatio... R.A. House

The project is located in the state of Jalisco, south of the city of Guadalajara, in a neighborhood in the countryside. The commission specified a house for five people and it seeked to use the available land surface to its maximum potential. Starting from a full block, we encountered five trees of considerable scale. Their location and the clear decision of conserving them, marked the majority of the formal strategies of the project. Two of the threes, located in the front, defined the garage. Another one, in a side, gave way to the main access path, sectioning the built volume. The rest, located in the back, shelter and shade the terrace of the house.   From this point, we opened diverse patios, which -in between walls- create a di... En savoir plus

Sea Wolf

Casa Solferino

On the seventh floor of the "Casa Alta" of 1954 in the center of Turin, Fabio Fantolino signs Casa Solferino, an apartment where, more than other times, the attempt is to bring luxury close to design, a usually difficult dialogue between two worlds that tend to maintain an irreconcilable distance. The interior design choices of the whole project have been guided by a philosophy using the blue color as its flagship, accompanied and contrasted by rich and elegant upholstery and fabrics, simultaneously kept undertone using neutral colors and black walnut elements. The resin floor further enhances the iconic design elements and the color spikes. In the dining room, the shiny petrol blue table with champagne mirror edges is the main subject of... En savoir plus

Gottardi House

From an old workshop to a private dwelling: renovation of a building in Faenza old town PRE-EXHISTENCE: an old workshop in the historical city centreDeserted buildings, distinguished by decadence charm, can become the scene of urban growth, even in small scale interventions. That is what happened to the building in vicolo Gottardi, in Faenza old town, few meters from one of the main streets of the city. Used in the past as a carpenter’s workshop, the building still preserves the characteristics and materials of a ‘raw’ place, such as concrete and unplastered bricks. It relates to the private courtyard through large stained glasses with distinctive steel frames. RENOVATION PROJECT: from workshop to private homeThe old bu... En savoir plus

Casa SH

The project consists of the remodelling of a house located in Mexico City. The two upper levels and the basement are organized around a central axis that orders and distributes public and private spaces; whose main function is to be the access conduit to them.  The initial party of the property sought to give all spaces natural lighting and ventilation, thus making the openings the main visual finishes, the integration of the public areas on the ground floor with the garden, were elements that were preserved at the time of redesign. The remodelling sought to potentiate the interior design of the house by unifying finishes through a neutral colour palette and materials such as walnut wood, raw viroc cinza, and San Gabriel black granit...
