An exploration of transformative concepts, the residence became a “laboratory” examining the possibilities of modulating programmatic zones found within a prototypical townhouse or condominium unit, with the added challenge of one that is relatively compact (900SF). Ben Rahn/A-Frame Ben Rahn/A-Frame The public zones are comprised of living, dining and kitchen areas that are easily transformed for entertaining when a pivoting dining table, integrated with the kitchen island, swivels and stores into it. This effectively extends the living area into the dining/kitchen area. Full-height cabinet doors that conceal kitchen cabinetry transform the kitchen to a bar. 19th street

Sidell Pakravan Architects has renovated an apartment in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill by contrasting a set of distinct wood volumes against the dominant horizontal planes of existing low ceiling heights and making use of an unused roof to capture outdoor space within the city.    The volumes, clad in walnut, establish a warm visual language that continues from the main floor through to a new penthouse. One volume controls vertical movement through the space, while a second defines the main living area and breaks through the ceiling to create a large interior room on the roof. The reading of the two volumes registers as a material difference between the insertions and the surrounding perimeter. A deep built-in bookcase on o... En savoir plus

West Berkeley Bungalow

A new two-story volume is an addition to this existing Berkeley bungalow. The new space, a fifteen-foot square footprint, adds a sunken family room on the ground floor and a new bedroom and bathroom above. Skinny windows on the upper level capture views of the hills beyond, while a large picture window on the ground level invites a vivid, framed view of the backyard. The volume, clad in a rain screen of marine-grade plywood panels, feels like an extension of the residence, yet also a distinct and separate part.  In poor repair after years of neglected dry rot, the existing bungalow was renovated with new stucco and windows. The existing trim was removed, creating a short, boxy counterpart to the new addition tower. Originally built in... En savoir plus

EOLICA RESIDENCE Location: Pregassona, SwitzerlandBuilt-up area: 4,088 sq. mDate: 2014 – 2017 The urban insertion completes and defines the urban block in a clear way by following the alignments of the buildings north and south of Via Vedreggio. The district Project consists of 4 buildings: orthogonal volumes that are inserted out of alignment in order to create a dynamic green space that on the plan resembles wind turbines. The buildings too are characterized by the centripetal “wind rotation” of the apartments around the central vertical circulation, thus opening the views from the living rooms towards perspectives that are characterized and amplified by the curvature of the living room terraces. The architectural c... En savoir plus

Ridge Oak Residence

Prominent Austin architect, Howard R. Barr FAIA, designed this mid-century modern gem in the heart of Austin’s Highland Park neighborhood in the late 1940’s. It was a typical ranch style mid-century, with a central low hallway and bedrooms off either side. The living room was set at an angle at the back of the house, which opened to a view of Lake Austin and greater Hill Country. When repeat clients bought it from Barr’s son in 2016, they hired the firm to design a complete renovation, new addition, and Interiors.    The firm took care to respect Barr’s original design and street presence by maintaining the brick, wood siding, carport, and punched opening proportions at the front façade. Besides fo... En savoir plus

The concept of a residential complex

The introduction of additional functions into a residential complex is one of the answers to the new time with its difficulties, challenges and opportunities, and it is also a huge step towards the comfort of residents. The multifunctional residential complex in Tushino offers a range of services that will be in demand by every group of residents. So, for young families there are additional options for activities for children, for pet owners there are a veterinarian’s office and a sink at the entrance. The residential complex also offers a yoga studio, a massage room, a squash court, a painting studio and creative workshops, checkpoints for contactless food delivery and keeping it warm. These and many other services improve the qualit... En savoir plus

Improvement of MainSTREET Residential Complex

The landscaping of the residential complex territory — is its fifth facade, which is as important for the perception of the complex as its architectural facades. Our task — is to create a harmonious space in which the pacifying natural component of the landscape is combined with the functional elements that increase the comfort of the complex’s residents. The concept is inspired by Moscow and reflects the metropolis in miniature, we were inspired by the metro map, the relentless movement and dynamics of the city, its lights and, of course, the location of the residential complex. The territory offers the residents a real garden in the city center, invisible from the outside, inside it opens up with a variety of landscape... En savoir plus

Hartford Residence

With an owner’s vision for a refined retreat notable for fluid spaces and artful detail, this centrally located Austin residence makes the most of its steeply sloped, quiet, leafy site. Throughout the house, the flow of spaces is informed by light; rooms open one after another and draw residents forward to discover what’s next. Two deceptively simple single-story gabled structures are connected by a glass entry foyer through a formal entry court. The glass entry reveals an outdoor living oasis with a pool at the sunken rear yard while bridging public and private wings on the main level. The public wing provides a vaulted great room for kitchen, living and dining with a balcony that overlooks the pool below. A delicate open trea... En savoir plus

Woonona House Studio

The project involves a new house and studio spaces for a sea-changing artist couple on a substantial yet narrow remnant site in the NSW south coast town of Woonona. It draws upon the typology of farmhouses that were prevalent in the area during early 19th century settlement of the town, embracing utilitarian qualities in construction methods and materials. Unlike the built pattern of the surrounding context, the proposal is comprised of a small 103 sqm plan that is organised into simply demarcated public and private zones within a low saw-tooth roof arrangement. The primary environmental sustainability initiative is in the provision of a modestly sized footprint that is responsibly small-scaled. This achieves an objective of 'compactness'... En savoir plus
