Liverpool La Perla Facade

The project is located in the La Perla Shopping Center District, in the City of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico. It is an exercise in urban integration that combines modernity through architecture and tradition in the activities of the community in Jalisco. Caption The facade converges at a vertex that forms the union of two avenues, it is formed by a grid of triangular modules with flat pieces and in low relief, forming a subtracted pyramid, which when rotated allows multiple variables, and when combined it manages to transmit the sensation of movement. The texture rotates along the walls of the façade, which points and accentuates the main access to the store. In addition to the set of reliefs, the same geometry has been transferred... Downtempo

DESIGN INTENT Set in the Mayacamas Mountains between Sonoma and Napa, the site for this weekend home is just 10 minutes from downtown Calistoga, but it seems much further removed. The owners envisioned a retreat where they could build lasting memories with their children, entertain friends and enjoy the wine country’s slower pace. Our intent for the project was to capitalize upon the unique nature of the site and views, while respecting the character of the land. Within this sensitive terrain, sustainability and fire resistance were key drivers for the design. Bruce Damonte DESIGN SOLUTION Our involvement with the project began early. Familiar with the valley and the site from regular bike-riding excursions in the area, we wal... En savoir plus

Amagansett Addition

The client, a bachelor, found that his existing house, located on a bluff overlooking Amagansett Beach, did not provide enough space for entertaining his many friends and family for the summer. The existing pool deck provides stunning panoramic views of the ocean, so capitalizing on the view and creating an easy flow from inside to outside was critical in the design of this 5,000 square-foot modular guest house addition. Caption The client’s brief called for the existing house to remain, so a large auto court was created to accommodate guest entry. Additionally, a new sitebuilt garage is cantilevered off the bluff. A large hydraulically-operated glass garage door and floor-to-ceiling glazing opposite the garage door maintain vie... En savoir plus

Cornwall Cabin

Overlooking a lush wooded valley below, the Cornwall Cabin rests on a steep sloping site in a rural corner of Northwestern Connecticut. As a weekend retreat for a Manhattan mother and her young daughter, the 1,500 square foot modern prefabricated cabin - located two hours outside the city - was carefully designed for simple, low-maintenance living. The compact floor plan efficiently accommodates the essentials for their weekend lifestyle. Custom built-ins for storage, benches, bookshelves, and bunk beds were incorporated throughout to maximize space and usability. Caption The cabin is sited to allow for uninterrupted views of the valley to the South. As such, the house is a linear composition oriented on an East/West axis, with expans... En savoir plus

Liverpool Department Store Facade in Merida, Mexic

The project is located in La Isla Merida Shopping Center, in the Yucatan, Mexico. It is considered one of the largest and most important shopping centers in Southeast Mexico. The purpose of the project is to generate a facade that breaks with the rigid structure of the premises. The design of the facade generates a texture that provokes a contrast between shadows and reflections with the different solar illuminations, even at night with artificial lighting. Using 3 triangular modules, each formed by 3 plates, the result were pieces with different reliefs. These modules created a pattern that is repeated as many times as necessary and by rotating its position it creates an effect of non-repetition, achieving a single texture. Since... En savoir plus

AULA K – Modular classroom for environmental educa

MODULAR CLASSROOM FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION First talks of teachers to their disciples were made under the shelter of a tree. Thus, the tree was the first school, the first classroom. The project consists of the design and construction of a prototype module for environmental education classrooms, a learning and discovery space, to be installed in different locations of the metropolitan area of Barcelona park’s network. It is proposed that it is also a habitat for some species of animals, insects, invertebrates, birds... It must be an open space to the outside; it is necessary that one could see the trees from the classroom, to perceive the light and feel the climate. The building is planned as a prefabricated module, flexible and as econ... En savoir plus

LO Residence

The clients wanted a lively environment, one that would appeal to their two young sons now and as they grew older. Each aspect of the design was detailed as a kit-of-parts (set of building blocks), exposing functional components, material layers, joints and hardware. This method made it easier to both build in the shop and visually engage the children in the construction process. The clarity and expressiveness of traditional Japanese woodworking, such as Kaidan Dansu step chests, Tansu mobile storage cabinets, and Shoji Screen room dividers, informed the design process. The choice of construction grade lumber and hardware lent itself well to the aesthetic goals while making it easier to more cost-effectively realize the functional goals. The... En savoir plus

Fishers Island House

Located off the coast of Connecticut and Rhode Island, yet occupying a body of water in the state of New York, Fishers Island is accessible only by ferry. While during the summer months the island’s population swells to over 3000, year-round residents total only about 300. Delivery of daily supplies and materials is therefore limited. Contractors live on the mainland, creating short workdays due to the commute, thereby causing construction of a new home to take longer and effectively cost more. Leveraging off-site construction, shipping volumetric prefabricated modules—complete with plumbing, electrical, and finishes—makes for a much more cost-effective method of building on the island. The boxes were designed specifically... En savoir plus
