Casa Boa Esperança

Casa Boa Esperanca is a historic landmark building perched on the edge of a small promontory in the fishing village of Ferragudo, Algarve, Southern Portugal. Due to local planning policies, several restrictions were placed on the building. This led to the need for a careful and sensitive approach to the restoration. The concept consisted primarily of the installation of new timber structures within the existing walls. This solution enabled open spaces to be created within the existing footprint and views of the sea to be greatly enhanced. The new structural elements of the renovation were left exposed and a large studio space was created within the former roof void. The building is flooded with light due to the insertion of several ro... En savoir plus

Casa delle Arti di Comacchio

How do you measure the quality of a piece of architecture? What parameters could establish whether a building is a good example of architectural practice? Photography: Lourdes Cabrera The "Casa delle arti di Comacchio" has been a perfect case study in the analysis of these questions—a public work, of significant social importance, made with a reduced budget and the need to satisfy highly-technical acoustic standards, while also being located in a context of great historical and monumental value—  a true commitment to low-profile local architecture with a high impact on the community.  Caption Comacchio is an ancient town in the province of Ferrara in the north of Italy— a small Venice in the Po Delta... Goldener Papagei

Belgrade. When Zlatni Papagaj („Golden Parrot“) – the first all’italiana coffee bar in the city – opened its doors in 1979, its great success began to pave the way for Italian coffee culture and lifestyle in the former federal capital of Yugoslavia.   David Schreyer David Schreyer Following many examples in Trieste, the interior was reduced to the essentials — only a single bar made of metal stands out as the centerpiece of the venue: the coffee machine. Seating areas were left out completely. Almost four decades later, Nathan Spacić – son of the original founder – is paying tribute to the place that was a symbol of lightness and joy of life for its guests, by realizing his v... House for a City, Once for a family

The House of Ettehadieh, is a series of buildings and courtyards that came to life approximately 150 years ago. It is an architectural/urban manifestation and reflection of a chapter of ancient Tehran and its dwellers; A true example of time-space architectural poetry. Parham Taghioff Spread over 9 thousand square meters, sat at the heart of Laleh-Zar Avenue, once known as the Champs-Élysées of Tehran, the historic site tells the tale of Ettehadieh family who moved in from their hometown of Tabriz about 105 years ago. For 50 years prior to their move, the property belonged to Amin-ol-Sultan, treasurer of the Shah of Qajar, and was used by the royals to entertain and cater for foreign guests of the palace. Esterházy Castle - Reconstruction of the West Wing

When visiting Eszterháza and catching a glimpse of the castle, a visitor’s first impression will be the symbiosis of unity and grandeur. The majestic inner court and the median risalit that can be seen from the park almost entirely mask the characteristics of the previous building eras. The challenge of design was of interest to us from the aspect of clarifying the relationship with this property and the question of heritage which, when considered more closely, raised a series of questions. The entire west wing hosts exhibitions, where it is primarily the high standards and wealth of a bygone era which are exhibited. Spaces are used in a different way which free us from some restraints: we were able to abstain from attempting t... En savoir plus

Militaerkaserne, Zurich

The military barracks are integrated into an overall compound designed according to the master plan by Johann Caspar Wolff. Their staggered, axial arrangement includes stables, a riding arena, depots, the parade ground and the armoury, which concludes the premises to the north. The grounds extend over the River Sihl and connect the city centre to the Aussersihl district. The barracks were subsequently constructed in a historicist style between 1873 and 1876 according to plans by Wolff’s successor, Johann Jakob Müller. The design gave the ideologically characterised development a fortified expression, its sandstone masonry tower acting as a central avant-corps.  The proposed project to convert it into an education centre... Hause zur Sommerau, Uetikon am See

The listed Haus Zur Sommerau in Uetikon is situated on a ridge in the immediate vicinity of school buildings, a community centre and the Uetikon Kirchenhügel. The property is defined by the large front garden with its bordered, circular “Brezelwegen”, garden beds, fences and historical garden gates and is a reminder of the prestigious buildings of the upper classes. The house was likely built in 1902 by Karl August Veit, architect of the Weissenrain schoolhouse, which lies in front of the building and with which it shares a strong resemblance – both are realised in the historical style. The house is characterised by its half-hipped roof, roof brackets and southeast-facing loggias. The conservation order incl... En savoir plus

Podere Bedano

The property, an antique Tuscan farm whose original nucleus dates back to 1712, lies near Casale Marittimo, a small town of the Alta Maremma, located 10 km inland from the sea. The challenge was to introduce and involve minimal and contemporary architectural elements in an environment rich in nature and tradition. The solution adopted to achieve this objective has been to maintain as much as possible the vernacular architecture of Maremma using local technologies and materials for the external envelope, juxtaposing minimal design and clean interiors. The help of local workers during the construction phase has been crucial for plugging the building in the landscape and environment context and to respect local architectural traditions. Act...
