Erlev School by Arkitema Architects marks a new generation of timber schools in Scandinavia

A timber school with a forward-thinking perspective, Erlev School in the Danish city of Haderslev marks a new generation of timber schools in Scandinavia with its particular emphasis on social, economic and environmental sustainability.   Niels Nygaard Accommodating 500 students, the City of Haderslev had from the outset of the project a clear ambition to push the boundaries of conventional school design. As such, Arkitema Architects were given the freedom to experiment with design, construction and materials in a new way.  Niels Nygaard The resulting design shapes the interior of the school with simple and open geometries that encourage curiosity and creativity. Within these geometries, atypical learning spaces and zo... En savoir plus

North Park Academy

The proposed expansion to the North Park Academy would create a dramatic new addition to a historic but undistinguished existing school.  Occupying an unusual triangular site, the bold form of the new structure would offer an appealing visual termination to the axis of the avenue approaching the school. Caption Caption Using a language of arches, the building readily expresses its function as a school, and in particular its intended use for kindergarten and pre-K classes.  Within the elliptical form would be a hidden courtyard, serving as outdoor play space for children, and also as an outdoor assembly area, neatly incorporating the existing exterior facade of the auditorium as a backdrop.  A new main entry would b... Barrett’s Grove

Barrett's Grove, designed with Amin Taha + Groupwork, is a six-home residential building set on a disjointed, but characterful urban street on the boundary of conservation area in Stoke Newington. The form of the six-storey building echoes the tall gables of an adjacent school and the standalone presence of the neighbouring townhouse.   Spruce cross-laminated timber is used for all wall, floor and roof superstructure and enveloping this is a continuous non-structural façade of striking perforated brickwork. Cantilevering wicker-woven balconies soften the external palette, and complete the fairy-tale trio of materials - brick, wood and straw – that was influenced through consultation with pupils at the school. Internally,... En savoir plus

House AD

Eton Accessory Building

The Eton Accessory building sits amongst a gnarly row of alley structures of varying vintages; old stucco garages, laneway homes and garden sheds. It stands out and invites curiosity from the neighbourhood – what is it used for? What is it made of?   This 100% wood structure is a testament that no project is too small for prefabrication, its design born out of a strong desire to work with cross laminated timber – to better understand its properties as well as the efficiencies of its assembly on a project of a very small scale. Designed as a kit of parts, the structure is entirely made of 3 ply CLT with large cedar framed openings at both ends. Skylights and windows are strategically cut in to allow daylight into the woody... En savoir plus

New House - A new way to live

The project was conceived as a study of different alternatives for a refuge residence that at the same time can be replicated in different situations, such as countryside, beach or even in the same urbanized centers. Hence the proposal to make a modular structure in which it is easy to assemble and standardized manufacture, seeking greater precision and generating less waste, this makes our proposal sustainable and less aggressive with the environment. The aim of the project was to propose the primitive shape of the house: open to the landscape. The play of lights and shadows enriches the transformative perception of the house, as volumetry we have a subtle square box that does not interfere with nature and can also integrate with the diff... CLT (Cross Laminated Timber)

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a large-scale, prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel. Lightweight yet very strong, with superior acoustic, fire, seismic, and thermal performance, CLT is also fast and easy to install, generating almost no waste onsite. CLT offers design flexibility and low environmental impacts. For these reasons, cross-laminated timber is proving to be a highly advantageous alternative to conventional materials like concrete, masonry, or steel, especially in multi-family and commercial construction. Residence at the Albtrauf

Self-confident solitaire What exactly makes for a good house is not laid down anywhere. The question "How do we want to live?" is too personal, as is the answer. All the more astonishing is the fact that in modern residential areas, single-family houses are as alike as two peas in a pod. In a new residential quarter being built in Neuffen, a town in Württemberg, Stuttgart-based architect Henrik Isermann has implemented an ensemble of two residential buildings for his wife's family that self-confidently demonstrates how to creatively deal with the provisions of a regulatory development plan. In the context of the neighbouring buildings it gives the owners their own architectural expression, and although both buildings share the same de... En savoir plus

Snøhetta design a constellation of pentagonal timber cabins that respond to Norway’s windswept climate

On a small plateau in Luster, located in the western part of Norway, Tungestølen is a series of nine pentagonal timber cabins that look out over a beautiful glacier environment. Designed by Snøhetta, the cabins replace an original tourist cabin destroyed by a cyclone in 2011.  The project was commissioned by Luster Turlag, a local branch of the Norwegian national trekking association. Jan M. Lillebø Keeping in mind lessons learned from the destruction of the original cabin and the dramatic weather conditions of this mountainous site, Snøhetta designed the new cabins with glulam frames, covered by sheets of CLT and clad with ore pine.  Ketil Jacobsen The beak-like shape of the exterior cabin... CLT House

CLT House is a bridge between architectural thinking and sustainable construction methods. It is a poetic and pragmatic balance between architect and builder, whose relationship developed from the concept design to ensure a highly considered outcome. The project encompasses a reconfiguration of the existing building as the base with a new upper floor addition which spans the established gardens on the site and replans the home with a new central core for this multigenerational family home.   The rhythmic quality of the sawtooth roof to the new bridge structure is both lyrical and rational. The pitched roofs to the north integrate an extensive solar array with high level windows at its peak to capture the changing light throughout the... En savoir plus
