This 120m2 house is located in the heart of the well known “ensanche” district of Barcelona and responds to the typology of housing that was established in Barcelona in the early twentieth century. An elongated floor that goes from the main façade to the block courtyard within a corridor that communicates both ends and where the access door is located.
The proposal consists of preserving the historical character of the space, for which an important restoration and recovery work is carried out. For this reason, we decided to preserve the hydraulic mosaic tiles in the spaces where there were in a good condition and we added an oak parquet floor in the spaces in which it needed to be changed. The original doors and windows were also restored and the false ceiling was removed in order to show the original structure of the vaulted ceiling and we also brought back the brick walls.
Responding to the needs of the inhabitants, a young family with a little girl, and taking advantage of the geometry of the space, the floor is divided into two zones, daily-family zone and rest zone. The bedrooms are located in the east zone, corresponding to the main façade. In the bedrooms, the style is simple taking advantage of all the qualities of the space: the brick wall, the wooden beams and the mouldings of the original doors and windows.
Kitchen, dining room, living room and studio are located on the west side, facing the quiet interior courtyard. Creating an open and luminous space with access to the gallery, one part of which is a terrace and the other a studio. The kitchen is the protagonist of the space. With clean and minimalist lines is understood as a block that extends towards the corridor incorporating the door to the pantry.
The open area is conceived as a meeting space for the family and at the same time, it’s designed to help each one finds their own space and at the same time maintaining contact with the other members. For this reason, we have designed fixed furniture that organizes the space without breaking the visual continuity. The simplicity of the proposal aims to emphasizes the presence of the historical architectural elements that bring a lot of warmth and comfort to space.
