We felt honoured to have been engaged by our Torrens Park client – she has a passion for and understanding of mid-century architecture and we felt fortunate to have an opportunity to showcase our traditional craftsmanship techniques. The home interacts seamlessly between inside and out. We created new spaces that were consistent with the existing. Urban Habitats were excited to launch into a sympathetic renovation of this 70’s mid-century inspired home. Teaming up with Douglas Gardiner was truly a team effort to create a functional foot print, seeking to retain existing materials and complement these with the new materials selections, with an outstanding outcomes on all fronts, specifically the cabinetry, timber ceilings and wet areas.
The home is an exceptional example of simplicity in detailing blended with traditional craftsmanship to the original home and a strong emphasis on adherence to the original design intent in the new works. The materials selection, colour palette and joinery design all contributed to a contemporary mid-century feel and the outcome is an amazing transformation of the space. Dedication to accurate reproduction of details led to a number of challenges but the outcomes across the home are testament to the effort involved. An outstanding outcome – and we specifically love the cabinetry, timber ceilings and wet areas.
What was the brief ?
The brief from the client was to let the material selections be the focal point of the external elevations, with the architectural form pushing the boundaries of what we could manage in the local area. The high calibre workmanship applied to these building works has resulted in a contemporary home addition requiring minimal future upkeep or maintenance from the owner.
What were the key challenges?
Planning conditions around flood-zone management.
The restricted access around the tight site.
Accurately replicating some exisiting 70's detailing.
The key selection was the natural timber cladding featured under the verandah eaves and portions of internal ceiling
along with straw/ solomit ceiling panels to match existing,
• commercial glazing,
• feature face brickwork and paving,
• Hardwood decking verandah and steps.
• Structural steel pergola and retractable awning over deck.
• Red brick feature walls.
• Commercial aluminium windows and doors.
• Custom timber cabinetry with Caesartone bench tops.
