Communicating spaces punctuated by exposed beams are the leitmotiv of RS HOUSE, a former wash-house of a typical building in the heart of Garbatella (Rome) being converted into a 75sqm apartment. There are three elements giving character to the entire apartment and underlining its distinctive features: The trapezoidal lift shaft which is completely covered in a warm color contrasting with the milky-white exposed beam; shaped shelves run towards the kitchen, connecting with cabinets serving the sleeping area. Moving around the trapeze and following the shape of the plan, you reach the bedroom.
The lighting highlights the walk-in closetmade entirely in oak, cladded by a large window on one side that protects the master bedroom which does not have an access door. The open kitchen is custom-made and follows the shape of the beams. It pushes towards the large window from which you can enjoy a 180-degree view of the city. A breakfast bar covered in Calacatta marble creates a partition with the dining area.
We though it would be interesting to describe the RH HOUSE in maybe the most relevant moment of the entire project, the moment when the architect gives the keys to the client. We tried to represent the mixed sensation we can feel when entering in what will soon become our new Home, new paths, new light, new dimensions, the emptiness. We wanted to catch this moment to enphatize the architectural structure and the details that identify the project.
