Pumping Station In Monteporreiro

Monteporreiro is a natural place next to the Lérez River, located few kilometers away from the city of Pontevedra. In this place, there is an existing pumping station for urban supply.

The increase in population to be supplied makes it necessary to expand the capacity of the aforementioned pumping station, maintaining its position by the river. This increase in capacity is achieved by means of new pumps whose height both in use (lowered) and in maintenance (elevated) has to be covered by the new enclosure, which determines the minimum height of the same. This is the first condition of the project.

The second condition is the need to make certain a minimum area of ventilation to the interior to ensure the salubrity of the work being carried out. The third condition is that the construction has to be made with up to 120cm high prefabricated concrete.

The project proposes a simple but strong solution to the three constraints: the prefabricated units reach the minimum height necessary for the operation and maintenance of the pumps and they gradually separate from each other until they achieve the necessary ventilation surface as well as reducing the "gravity" of the final volume. Two fronts of metal sheet like doors complete the needs of the program.

The volume is formalized as a large abstract element that is only related to the light metal bridge in the vicinity; unique elements built in the leafy and dense vegetation on the banks of the river.
