Prahran Residence

Studio Amble en tant que Architectes.

What was the brief?
Seeking a down-sized city pied-à-terre, the client chose this Prahran apartment for the area’s social vibrancy. Loving good design and never afraid to be bold with briefs that suit themselves, not market norms, they briefed us on an extensive refurbishment. The site was stripped to its concrete core, with all wall partitions removed, to transform a compact two-by-one into a spacious one-bedder with ensuite.

The Studio Amble ethos is grounded in the connection between designer and client. We take a deeply considered approach to producing beautiful and refined spaces that are unique to each client. For the King Street Residence, the desire was to evoke feelings of comfort and elegance. This was ultimately achieved through crafted moments and tactile materials that follow you throughout each space. A feeling of generous living was also paramount. Decisive planning, clever storage, and thoughtful material placement were used as illusory devices to create the feeling of an extended space.

What were the key challenges?
The apartment footprint is compact so we needed to strike a balance between making the spaces feel designed but not overpopulated. The reductive palette places emphasis on the subtle textures of each finish. Deliberately pared back to allow objects and furniture to exist without conflict and chaos, we wanted to ensure a sense of calm was felt throughout. The continuity of design language allows the home to feel cohesive but special, even in the most unexpected moments.

What materials did you choose and why?
We sort materiality that gave a sympathetic nod to the building’s context. Without wanting to be overly themed we aimed to balance the flamed oak chevron and custom black stained rattan through restrained design lines. Emphasis on materiality that would endure well under the rituals of day-to-day living, metals that are enhanced by patina over time, textured stones robust against daily life.
