Amare, the new performing arts centre in The Hague, will become the beating cultural heart of The Hague in 2021. The building will provide accommodation for the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), The Hague Philharmonic, the Royal Conservatoire and Stichting Dans - en Muziekcentrum Den Haag (DMC). The new building will replace the old Lucent Dance Theatre, designed by OMA, and the Dr. Anton Philipszaal. NOAHH has designed the performing arts centre as an expressive, multifunctional building that draws on state-of-the-art practices to create a social space that works in perfect synergy with its surroundings. The typology is based on an arrangement of the venues next to each other, surrounded by a ring of music studios and classrooms. The ground floor and the first floor contain the main public spaces. These are accessible from all sides. Transparent glass fronts create a natural transition from the public surroundings to the interior of the building. This natural continuity has been achieved by designing the façade as a series of theater curtains, opening up the building and entering into a dialogue with its surroundings. The building received the BREEAM Excellent certification.
