The New National Library of the Czech Republic is situated within a large green site looking from the Letna plateau towards the historical city center. A new public function in this part of the city will strengthen the relation between the two side of the river Moldau. The design consist of large vertical orientated volumes with narrow public spaces in between. Wandering, discovering and searching between bookshelves becomes in this building a new experience. The shelves become instead of furniture in a library room, the building in itself. Here the public will see and feel, the collection of 10 million books, in shelves of multiple stories high. The open space in between links the green surrounding park and the public space between the “bookshelves”. The outer skin of the building is covered with sand colored stone, related to pragues tradition and atmosphere.
