Hypogeum in Valpolicella

Carlo Cretella Architetto en tant que Architectes.

The project deals with the insertion of a swimming pool and an underground space inside a property located in Valpolicella. The will has been to respect the naturalistic space of the place, integrating the lines of the marogne in the new project building on the traces of the existing ones the hypogeum space used as changing room of the swimming pool.

The excavation and construction of this hypogeous space allowed to visually maintain the existing morphological conformation. The external covering, including the access door, have been covered with stones typical of the area to allow a constant dialogue with the garden.

The large windows reveal the interior of the dressing room that has been finished all in the same color of the land in which the project is inserted. Walls and ceilings in brown cement are camouflaged inside the intervention area, simulating the feeling of being inside the ground.

The whole has been enhanced by round corten steel skylights, which allow the entry of the sun's rays generating different plays of light depending on the time of day. They are also targeted spots, as in the bathroom, where a beam of light seems to penetrate through the ground.

What emerges from this project is the will to contribute to a deep dialogue between the morphology of nature and the architectural process: an intervention perceived as hidden, but that manages to arouse amazement when its doors open. Here it is revealed in its essence, in every thoughtful detail, but with effect.
