Glenn Sestig Architects en tant que Architectes.

An eighteenth-century Renaissance Chateau has been given a 21st century makeover in this careful union of old and new. Located in an idyllic, green location outside Ghent, the project involved the transformation of a majestic piece of historic architecture into a modern gallery for passionate art dealer Louis Lannoo. Opening up the original building’s interior towards its natural surroundings and bringing plenty of sunlight in were key goals in the conversion project. Strategically planned views out reinforce the interior’s connection with its setting, allowing the eye to wander and making the already fairly generous space feel even larger.

The design makes the most out of the existing building’s period features. A monumental staircase at the heart of the floorplan was restored to its former glory. The reception areas, offices, and exhibition rooms maintained their original, classical proportions and inherent grandeur. Clean, expansive surfaces in natural stone, wood and leather create an environment of minimalist luxury that makes for the perfect backdrop to display art. A specially designed penthouse apartment at the top houses the gallery’s artists-in-residence.
