DSM Research Centre

New research facilities will enable DSM to grow considerably in the coming years. While DSM recently moved into its new building on the Chemelot Campus in Geleen, the DSM Biotechnology Centre will be delivered in 2016. For both of these new construction projects, Bolidt was the company able to meet all the flooring requirements DSM had set out.

DSM drives innovation
DSM is known as a science-based company that develops innovative solutions nourishing, protecting and improving performance in global markets such as food and dietary supplements, personal care, feed, medical devices, automotive, paints, electrotechnics and electronics, life protection, alternative energy and bio-based materials.

Green and interdisciplinary campus
The new research centre in Geleen provides an important base for DSM’s research and development activities and reflects their brand promise: Brighter Science, Brighter Living. The new building is sustainable and built for the future with special attention to creating synergy and promoting mutual collaboration. Architect Broekbakema managed to integrate these key objectives into the design by bringing the different departments within DSM together in one transparent building centred around a square atrium thus connecting them both visually and physically.

BREEAM compliant
The building was designed with the aim of achieving a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating in order to meet DSM’s ambitious sustainability goals. Bolidt has made an important contribution to the building’s performance as the Bolidtop® systems perfectly comply with the BREEAM requirements for flooring. Having earned a “Very Good” certification, the research centre in Geleen has more than met DSM’s high standards in terms of sustainability.

A hotspot in Delft
The new laboratory for biotechnological research is still in development. It will replace a current lab that has become too small and outdated and is no longer able to meet today’s standards and needs. In this large transparent glass building, the researchers of the DSM Biotechnology Centre (DBC) as well as other innovative companies will make their contribution to biotechnology and thus to a future, in which we can use raw materials and waste in a sustainable manner. Throughout the process of defining the requirements and wishes for the different workspaces, architectural firm cepezed has worked closely with the users. After all, they are the ones who know the work processes in a laboratory inside out. The design for the new laboratory is typical of cepezed. While the laboratory building looks sleek and compact from the outside, the interior conveys a sense of openness, transparency and technological advancement. Bolidt’s Bolidtop® 525 flooring system perfectly matches the style that cepezed used.

A track record of trust

Since the end of the nineties, Bolidt has been installing its Bolidtop® systems at different DSM locations. Bolidt is a trusted partner to DSM. The architects Broekbakema and cepezed also know Bolidt from earlier collaborations. They are therefore familiar with the properties and possible applications of the Bolidtop® flooring range.

Broekbakema had a specific floor design in mind for the atrium of the new building in Geleen. Using various tones of red and orange, the outline of the DSM logo was to be incorporated into the floor finish. Despite the challenges during application, due to the complex line pattern of the logo, Bolidt managed to create the design completely according to Broekbakema’s wishes.

Apart from the design possibilities, DSM and Broekbakema jointly decided on the Bolidtop® systems because they maintain their colour fastness and they could make a contribution to achieving BREEAM certification.

In Delft, the Bolidtop® 525 flooring system from Bolidt fits in seamlessly with the design, but the technical requirements for the flooring are at least as important to DSM. Because of the high safety standards set by DSM, the flooring had to pass a series of slip resistance tests and was also tested for its resistance to chemicals. DSM and Bolidt took a look at every space together enabling Bolidt to provide the right flooring solution for each individual space.

Opportunities for open innovation

Hunter Douglas Architectural en tant que Ceilings.

The new DSM Materials Sciences Center at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Sittard-Geleen is an important base of research and development for Materials Sciences. For DSM Engineering Plastics this is also the main research center worldwide. The Brightlands Chemelot Campus is a particularly industrial and innovation complex in life sciences and materials sciences. Brightlands Chemelot Campus is a breeding ground of renewal and offers opportunities for open innovation by the proximity of other (start-up) companies and research and educational institutions. The building will have a capacity of approximately 420 employees. The Ceiling used here is 30BD CCA Acoustic+.
