The new interior of the American Book Centre works as a continuous bookcase.

After more than thirty years of being located in the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the American Book Centre moved into a new building. It is only a few metres away from their old location. The foundation of the building was heavily affected by the vibrations caused by passing trams. Therefore it had to be substantially restored.

This required work on the foundations provided the opportunity to alter the interior of the building. Architect Yaniv Turgeman of ADP architectuur suggested to break through the levels of the building by cutting though the floor with spiral bookcases. The result is a shop with a large contrast between the outside and inside world. The outside shows a clear undisturbed stacked façade. The inside shows a gradually increasing route that takes the visitors from the ground level to the third floor unnoticed. Cutting through the floors is not only comfortable but gives a spatial feeling as well. The typical division of different departments of bookstores is denied by the American Book Centre.
